CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District awarded an honorary diploma to Tamir Rice at a ceremony Friday evening at the East Professional Center.

Rice was 12 years old in 2014 when he was fatally wounded by a Cleveland police officer.

Rice would have graduated this spring, the district said. Rice’s mother Samaria Rice accepted the diploma.

The district said Rice was among 50 students who received diplomas as part of the district’s summer commencement. The commencement is held annually for students who need to make up credits during the summer.

On Nov. 22, 2014, Rice was playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center in Cleveland. He was shot and killed by Officer Timothy Loehmann seconds after Loehmann and his partner, Officer Frank Garmback, arrived.

Although the Department of Justice dropped its civil rights investigation into Rice’s death, earlier this year, Cleveland City Council asked the Biden administration to reopen the case.
