CLEVELAND — The Capitol Theatre in Cleveland set its reopening date tentatively for this August, the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization announced this week.

The organization previously set a July 17 reopening date but was forced to push it back after not receiving a federal grant. The organization said on Thursday that it received funds through the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, which will cover the repairs, bills and supplies needed to reopen.

The Capitol Theatre has been closed for 15 months and was intending on celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Like many other entertainment venues, the Capitol Theatre applied for “shuttered venue” grants through the federal government. The federal government allocated $500 million for Ohio entertainment venues to cover losses during the pandemic.

Those funds have been trickling to venues in recent weeks.

As of earlier this week, 44 venues in Ohio received a Shuttered Venue Operation Grant from the federal government, which is up from nine from the week before.

In addition to funds through the federal government, the Capitol has received more than $18,000 in donations. The organization will put those funds toward its Centennial Campaign, which has a goal of raising $100,000 by spring 2022.
