  • The repeal is a response to federal and state-level changes

Columbus City Council voted unanimously Monday evening to repeal the city’s mask mandate.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Ginther announced that he had signed the repeal, which takes effect immediately.

“Repealing the mask mandate aligns the city with the guidelines from the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC. Our best tool in the fight against COVID-19 remains vaccination, and I encourage residents to get their vaccines,” he said in the tweet.

Ginther asked City Council to repeal the city’s mask order on May 19.

Officials said the repeal is a response to the latest federal guidance and Gov. Mike DeWine’s recent moves to end mask requirements for most situations.

Some Columbus businesses have not been requiring masks since May 17 when the state updated its health orders allowing fully vaccinated residents to patronize businesses without masks. Other businesses stopped requiring masks on June 2 when Ohio ended most statewide health orders.
