Columbus police arrest 3 teens in operation using a bait car to catch thieves

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol said three teens were arrested Friday during an operation aimed to catch car thieves.

Officials said Monday afternoon they used a “bat car” near Ohio State University’s main campus. The car is a decoy that has surveillance technology and allows law enforcement to remotely monitor the vehicle. 

The bait car was left near East 9th Avenue and North High Street, near North High Street and East 17th Avenue and the intersection of North High Street and East 18th Avenue.

Three teens, two 15 year olds and one 17 year old, were arrested between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Dec. 3. A gun was also recovered, according to police. 

Police said the 17-year-old suspect stole the vehicle when it was at North High Street just south of and East 17th Avenue, and eventually led officers on a foot chase. They were charged with a weapons offense and theft of a motor vehicle.

The two 15 year olds stole the bait car left near North High Street and East 18th Avenue. They were arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
