CINCINNATI, Ohio — Every summer, the Mayerson JCC welcomes dozens of kids to its facility for its annual camp. But this year, that camp experience has been extended because of the pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • The Mayerson JCC recently created “All Day at the J”
  • The program provides students with virutal learning support, homework assistance, and physical activity
  • It is available for students in kindergarten to eighth grade
  • The program is expected to run until students return to in-person classes

“Throughout the camp summer, everyone just kept saying, ‘I wish this would continue into the year,’” said Lauren Glynn, Mayerson JCC assistant director of camp and extended care. “And at a certain point, me, along with other program team members and the program director and, you know, other people at the J, like the CEO, the COO, we were all just talking… yeah, maybe this could be continued.”

So Glynn and her colleagues created “All Day at the J.”

“It’s really a program to help give support to families as their kids are navigating through virtual learning,” she said.

Instead of virtual learning from home, at the J, students receive virtual learning support, help with homework, and get the chance to participate in fun activities with their peers.

“At a certain point you want to make sure that kids are being safe and making sure that they’re getting their work done by getting them out and interacting with each other is also so important, especially for those kids that are only children and they are only interacting with themselves or their parents,” said Glynn.

All Day at the J is designed for kindergarten to eighth grade students. The program is expected to run until students return to in-person classes.

“It’s really unclear at this point just how long kids are going to be virtual, and if we can give those kids routine, at least for this school year, I think it’d be wonderful,” she said.
