KETTERING, Ohio — The pandemic has made it challenging for artists to stay afloat.
One Ohio nonprofit is doing its part with its annual Cookie Walk.
It was a busy morning for We Care Arts artist Tonia Watkins. She along with other artists and staff, boxed up thousands of donated cookies for a Cookie Walk on Saturday.
“You just get the box with the doily, weigh the cookies, put them in the plastic bag and then box it up,” said Watkins. “Put all the one pounds in one area and all the two pounds in one area.”
The Cookie Walk is all to support the artists and programs at We Care Arts. The nonprofit arts organization provides a variety of services to individuals of all ages and disabilities.
Watkins has been a part of the program for the past two years.
“I just started coming in here just to kind of get out and it really helped me excel,” she said.
Since joining the program, Watkins said she has not only learned more about herself, but she has also found her passion for painting with acrylics and creating abstract art.
“It just helps me express myself, it’s calming and I like making a painting for other people to have in their home and appreciate,” she said.
This is the 10th annual Cookie Walk. But for the past two years, the event has looked a little different because of COVID. In years past, you could come inside and make your own cookie bags. But this year it’s a drive-thru event.
“I just like getting out and it’s joyful and just to help people and volunteer,” she said.
The Cookie Walk is happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the We Care Arts facility. For more information on how you can place your order, click here.
