DAYTON, Ohio — The Dayton Police Department said it recently received a fraud complaint about a phone call, and now it’s alerting residents to be aware in case they are targets.

The department said the phone scam included several elements designed to seem legitimate, including the caller ID being labeled “Dayton Police.” However, the department said the phone number returned to Tennessee’s Dayton Police Department. The caller also used the address of Dayton, Tenn., before changing the location to the address of the Dayton Police Department in Ohio.

The caller also used the name of an actual Dayton police officer. According to the complaint, the caller stated the individual needed to pay a large sum of money.

The Dayton Police Department said it will never ask residents for money, gift cards, money orders, cashier’s checks or other forms of payments. The department said other jurisdictions have received phone scam reports recently.

If anyone receives this sort of phone call, especially if the caller is trying to create a sense of urgency, the department urges individuals to hang up and call 937-333-COPS (2677).
