CLEVELAND — Dr. Kandice Marchant is a pathologist. She’s worked at the Cleveland Clinic for 36 years and has quite the resume.

“I’m a hematopathologist which means I study blood and blood diseases,” Marchant.

She also has another passion. Luckily for her, it pairs well with her science background. Her other passion is cheese making.

What You Need To Know

  • The doctor owns Marchant Manor Cheese in Cleveland Heights
  • A lot of her cheeses are named after things she loves, including the name of the street she grew up on in England
  • Marchant said she is slowly switching from one career to another, but for now, doing both gives her joy

“To me, it’s so fascinating,” said Marchant. “Starting with four simple ingredients: Salt milk, cultures and your enzymes, and you can make anything from it.”

When she’s not wearing her white coat you can catch her in her white apron making cheese and selling it in her storefront, Marchant Manor Cheese, in Cleveland Heights.

“I really like the combination between science and artistry,” said Marchant.

Marchant said she is slowly switching from one career to another, but for now, doing both gives her joy.

“The thing about cheese making is it’s a very Zen like experience,” said Marchant.

She attributes a lot of her love for cheese making to her late husband who grew up in England and honors him through her craft. She names a lot of her product after places he loved.

“Flagship cheese Elmstead Ash, so that’s named after a street he grew up on in Birmingham, England,” said Marchant.

Marchant said her mission is to make, sell and teach people how to make cheese. “Makers, mongers and mentors” is her tagline. She hopes to continue to spread her love of cheese through Ohio and beyond.
