BLUE ASH, Ohio — Firefighters are bringing the COVID-19 vaccine straight to disabled and homebound seniors.

What You Need To Know

  • Fire departments across the state got the green light from the state to start the program
  • After getting an appointment through a local health department, they’ll send a firefighter out to administer the vaccine
  • In remote areas, firefighters say few have signed up, but they have enough for more

It’s not often these days that Sylvia Smith gets to be with a lot of family.

“Other than them standing at the door with a mask on or something, it’s kinda hard,” said Smith.

She’s homebound, she can’t walk on her own or have many visitors because of some serious health problems.

“I have lymphedema, it affects the lymph nodes,” she said.

She doesn’t want that to get any worse with a virus like COVID-19, but now, things are about to change.

She just got her first dose of the vaccine without leaving her bed.

“This is actually the only way that I could’ve gotten the shot,” said Smith.

Blue Ash Fire Chief Chris Theders and his team are going house to house giving the vaccine to homebound seniors.

“For each individual fire department to be able to distribute it, it makes it so much easier than for the health department to have to do the entire county which would be a huge under taking,” said Theders.

Fire departments got the go-ahead from the state to be able to give the vaccine.

Right now, he says their department is only giving a certain brand.

“This is Pfizer, so even though Johnson and Johnson is now back in circulation, they’re not giving that out to us yet again,” said Theders.

But Smith didn’t seem to mind because she’s spending time with her family with less worry about getting sick.

“It really brightens my day,” she said.
