CINCINNATI — It’s not every day that a freshman girls basketball player sets program records.

But Dee Alexander is making a name for herself.

What You Need To Know

  • Dee Alexander is a freshman for the Purcell Marian girls basketball team
  • Alexander is breaking records: she scored 49 points in a game, breaking the school’s record for most points in a game
  • She credits a lot of success to her high school coach who helped train her for years
  • Alexander hopes to play at the college level and one day in the WNBA

It’s not all that common to play on the varsity squad as a freshman, let alone start.

But for Dee Alexander, she had to step into those shoes quickly.

Dee is a 6-foot-1 wing for Purcell Marian in Cincinnati and is just 14 years old.

But that’s not all. She’s also breaking school records.

Earlier this week, she scored 49 points in one game — the most by any player, boy or girl, at Purcell Marian.

“Whatever records I can break, I want to break,” she said.

The game was the team’s first after a two-week winter break. Alexander said she wanted to go off.

“So when our game finally came I know it was half of me to at least put a show on for somebody,” Dee said. “So I put a show on for the city.”

She said once she realized she was on a roll, she wanted to score 50 points but came up just short.

The freshman credits a lot of success to her coach Jamar Mosley, whom she’s trained with for years.

Mosley said girls with Dee’s talent typically go to bigger schools but she wanted to stick with him.

“He holds all of his players accountable for whatever you do,” Dee said. “And I always liked how he coached, ever since I first met him and seen him coach. It was always a nice environment to be around.”

Dee said it’s a good lesson to show that no matter where you end up, your talent will carry you and that education is always the most important factor.

“You can go wherever you want to go, but as long as that school has what you want, then you will get what you want on the court,” she said. “But it’s always education first before the sports.”

So what’s next for this superstar?

She hopes to play in college and then in the WNBA.
