COLUMBUS, Ohio — The HBCU Classic for Columbus between Central State University and Kentucky State University kicks off this afternoon at Ohio Stadium for the first time in 25 years.

Organizers expect the game that begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday to attract a crowd of about 20,000 people, said Courtney Johnson, a spokeswoman for the event said. Tickets are now on sale.

The rivalry game is the main event of a four-day celebration of African American culture, education and tradition.

Before the game, the Professional Football Player’s Mother’s Association (PFPMA) will host  a one-hour Health and Wellness community exercise activation called Charg’d Up that will be led by former NFL Baltimore Ravens and Arena football player Philipe “Philly” Weeden, Johnson said.

From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Weeden, known for transforming bodies and as Dr. Miami of Cleveland, is going to lead a growing popular, fast-paced, upbeat and cardio workout.

Following Charg’d Up, PFPMA will conduct a panel discussion with NFL moms, NFL players and other special guests called Next Level Up — Beginning with End in Mind, Johnson said.

The Next Level Up program aims to arm high school and college athletes as well as their parents with information that will assist them in building a strong foundation for success in their college career and beyond, officials said.

Participants can get answers to their questions from NFL moms, current and former NFL players, and other special guests on the panel who will share their stories about college and professional sports and how to win the game of life, officials said.

“We are excited to be a part of this historic event that shares in our commitment to promoting educational programs in the areas of health and wellness, financial literacy, and developing student athletes,” said Gwendolyn Jenkins, PFPMA president. “Our partnership with Classic For Columbus helps us share our voice and give insights to student athletes and parents on how to prepare to win in the game of life at the next level, beginning with the end in mind.”

Other festivities include a drumline, Greek Step Show and Battle of The Bands.

The Classic for Columbus is an African American tradition that started in Columbus and was an annual event in the city from 1992-1996. It then became the Ohio Classic and rotated between Cleveland and Cincinnati until 2005, organizers said in a press release.

The event is presented by Nationwide, Huntington Bank and Revolution Mortgage, officials said.

“At Nationwide, we recognize the value of connecting with diverse audiences and Classic For Columbus is an important community celebration of diversity and inclusion,” said Ramon Jones, chief marketing officer for Nationwide. “We look forward to bringing this rivalry game back to Ohio Stadium, supporting the educational and cultural events, and showcasing what makes the HBCU experience so special.”
