Summer is in full swing with over 250 million people forecast to see temperatures in the 90s over the next week.

What You Need To Know

  • A large dome of warm air will settle across much of the country into next week
  • Expect highs generally in the 80s and 90s with some areas well into the triple digits
  • Remember to take proper precautions when working or playing outdoors

An impressive area of high pressure developing over the desert Southwest is to blame.

Cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas will bake even more so than usual with temperatures in the 110s beginning this weekend. Red flag warnings have already been hoisted for parts of the Rockies and interior west for an elevated risk of wildfires.

While other areas around the country won’t be quite as blistering, you’ll certainly notice it.

Texas and the Southern Plains will experience days of triple-digit heat with heat indices likely exceeding 110 in some areas.

The Sunshine State will live up to its moniker with temperatures continuing to reach the low-to-mid 90s through at least the next week or so with typical summer thunderstorms accompanying this heat and humidity.

Forecast high temperatures for this coming Monday.

The extended outlook doesn’t provide much relief, either.

Areas in red on this map are likely to see above average temperatures late next week as well. You’ll have to visit the Pacific Northwest to find any conditions cooler than what’s typical.

The heat is expect to peak in the Midwest and Northeast later next week with highs potentially approaching 100 in some inland areas.

Dangers of Heat

With the excessive heat comes an increased risk for heat-related illnesses.

Heat stroke can become life-threatening. If outdoors, be sure to take frequent breaks indoors and drink plenty of water. Never leave a child or pet in a vehicle, even for just a few minutes.

To protect from the sun, use a sunblock with broad spectrum protection. A wide-brimmed hat can help avoid sunburn while keeping your head cool at the same time!
