OHIO — The OHSAA Girls Basketball Championship has come to a close, and for many teams, they continued their winning streaks.

Mount Notre Dame Cougars once again added another Division I state championship title to its trophy case after beating Newark in a close double-overtime game, 57-55.

It was MND’s eighth girls basketball championship, which is the most in Ohio school history.

Napoleon took the Division II state champs title, beating Vinton County 76-44. Napoleon came back from a heartbreaking moment last year.  After winning 51 out of 52 games in 2020, they never made it to the state championship because of COVID-19. Now, they’re taking it all in.

The Hiland Hawks are officially the Division III champs, beating the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans 45-25. It’s the Hawks program’s sixth state title in its history.

Fort Loramie is the Division IV state champions, beat the McDonald Blue Devils 60 to 26 earlier Saturday. This is the third state championship title for Fort Loramie, which ends the season 29-1.

The energy is high Saturday for many Ohio high school girls basketball teams that didn’t quite get the chance to show their talents last year in arguably what is the most exciting competition for these players.

The 2020 OHSAA Girls Basketball Championship came to an abrupt stop when officials decided COVID-19 posed too great of a risk to let the games happen. Many teams, especially those who there for the first time, had their hearts broken after months and years of hard work.

OHSAA officials decided to let the 2021 games continue as planned with limited capacity inside the University of Dayton Arena, mostly consisting of family members.

Next weekend will be the OHSAA boys semifinals and state championship, March 18-20 at Ohio State’s St. John Arena. The championship games will be available to watch live on Spectrum News 1 and the Spectrum News app.
