OHIO — They say “seven is lucky.”

As some Ohioans purchase tickets for Monday’s Powerball drawing, history could be made. With the jackpot for Monday’s drawing up to $685 million, the state could end a streak of futility.

What You Need To Know

  • Powerball is a multi-state lottery held three times a week
  • There has not been an Ohio winner of Powerball in seven years
  • Out of five Powerball winners in 2021, two are from Florida and two are from New Jersey
  • There have been several recent Ohio winners of Mega Millions, the last coming in December 2019

It has been seven years since Ohio has been home to a winner of Powerball, according to the lottery. The multi-state lottery has been won 63 times since Ohioan Mary Ann Thompson won the July 9, 2014 drawing.

Since 2003, there have been three winning tickets claimed in Ohio. Thompson claimed a cash prize of $73.1 million from a $124.9 million jackpot.

The largest Powerball drawing won in Ohio since 2003 was on June 2, 2010 when a blind trust claimed cash winnings of $134.9 million from a $261 million jackpot, according to Powerball.

In order to win, five white balls must be correctly selected in addition to picking the correct Powerball number. The odds of matching all five white balls and Powerball are 1 in 292,201,338.

Ohioans have fared better in the other multi-state lottery Mega Millions. The last Ohio winner for Mega Millions was in December 2019, which was the largest jackpot ever claimed by an Ohioan.

According to Mega Millions, the “Great Hope Trust” claimed a jackpot of $375 million in 2019, and opted for the lump sum of $253.5 million. There have been three winning tickets claimed by Ohioans since the last Ohio Powerball winner.

Mega Millions is similar to Powerball as there are five white balls that are drawn in addition to a gold “Mega Ball.” The odds of drawing all five whtie balls and the Mega Ball in Mega Million is 1 in 302,575,350.

Powerball drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Drawings for Mega Millions are held Tuesdays and Fridays.

Results from tonight’s drawing will be available on the Ohio Lottery website.
