UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Alan Miciak has been named the next president of John Carroll University replacing Michael Johnson effective June 1, the university announced Monday.

Miciak becomes the 26th president of the 135-year-old institution.

Miciak serves as the university’s executive vice president and was previously the dean of the Boler College of Business.

“As president, my single focus will be to ensure each student receives the right mix of academic challenge, experiential opportunity, and personal formation,” Miciak said in a statement. “I look forward to working with our outstanding faculty, staff, and the entire John Carroll community to put our full focus on the well-being and success of our students.”

The university credited Miciak for creating new programs and facilities for the Boler College of Business. John Carroll said that Miciak helped secure three naming gifts as part of the Inspired Lives campaign that raised $25 million.

Johnson served as university president for three years. He will remain a professor for the College of Business while on sabbatical during the upcoming academic year.

“I have greatly enjoyed my time at John Carroll University and am proud of everything we have accomplished,” said Johnson. “I have been fortunate over my academic career to have served in multiple roles in higher education, as a professor, a dean, a provost, and a president. The most rewarding experiences in each of these roles has been the time spent with students and academic colleagues learning and collaborating, which is the heart of academic life. I look forward to the next chapter in my journey focusing more on these experiences.”

The university has a current enrollment of 3,479 students.

U.S. News and World Report ranks John Carroll University No. 2 for regional universities in the Midwest, behind Butler University in Indianapolis.
