OHIO — “Justice Matters” is a statewide journalism initiative examine Ohio’s criminal enforcement system.

Public radio station, WKSU/89.7, of Kent State University, is participating in the project and has launched a series of reports on issues around reforming the systems.

WKSU News Director Andrew Meyer spoke with Spectrum News 1 about the series.

“We communicated with our collaborative partners on the project and decided there were a number of key areas that really deserved attention,” Meyer said. “Policing, of course, the courts, sentencing, and rehabilitation and reentry. What we’re really trying to do is, two-fold, No. 1 highlight some of the issues that exist because they’ve been reported on, but they deserve more attention. No. 2, really try to present solutions and a road forward for how the criminal justice system can be improved so it better serves everybody who moves through that system.”

Meyer said the biggest thing the team found out was just how complex the system can be.

“Unless you work directly in the system, it is a mystery as to its inner workings,” Meyer said.
