CLEVELAND — Often times, people say when they donate their time, or preform a good deed it does more for them than the recipient. That rings true for one woman, known to those she helps as “The Leash Lady,” who has dedicated her time over the years to the dogs.

What You Need To Know

  • A woman who wants to remain anonymous has been hand making collars and leashes for the Cuyahoga Animal Shelter for years now
  • She doesn’t want recognition, only to know her work is appreciated by the shelter, dogs and their new families
  • To date she’s donated thousands of leashes to the shelter

Her love for dogs started with what she calls her heart dog.

“She showed up in the garage one day and never left,” said The Leash Lady.

She describes a “heart dog” as an animal that changes you for the better, an animal that found the person, not the other way around. The one that helps the person understand the needs of the animal that can’t tell them exactly what they need.

Giving has always been an essential part of who she is. The only catch is she doesn’t want any recognition.

“If you do something expecting something in return, it negates the value of what you’ve done,” said The Leash Lady.

She earned her name over years of hand making collars and leashes for dogs in the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter. She drops everything off about four times a year and always feels good when doing it.

“They’re really appreciative,” said The Leash Lady.

In this case, her good deeds are all for the dogs, and that’s how she wants to leave it.

It’s not about the credit; it’s about the good deed being done.

Although she doesn’t want to reveal her identity, she does want everyone to know the great work the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter is doing. She said they have wonderful staff and volunteers that work tirelessly to match deserving dogs with the right family.
