CINCINNATI — A day was filled of beautifying one lower-income neighborhood, thanks to partners across the city like the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

What You Need To Know

  • The annual Community Makeover Day is sponsored by major companies in Cincinnati like the Reds, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Proctor & Gamble
  • Each year, a different community is chosen, this year Avondale was picked
  • More than 300 volunteers at different sites helped with this year’s projects
  • The projects included new turf fields, a greenhouse and garden and free toys and school supplies

Sandra Jones Mitchell had been at it since 7 a.m., working alongside volunteers to beautify South Avondale Elementary School. It’s just one of six sites across Avondale where work is being done for the annual Community Makeover Day.

“To be able to be a part of this Reds community fund makeover with Proctor & Gamble, University of Cincinnati, Children’s Hospital, it just warms my heart, it’s a blessing to be here,” Jones Mitchell said.

More than 300 volunteers from major organizations in the city come together to complete projects in a Cincinnati neighborhood every year. For Jones Mitchell, a long-time Avondale resident, it meant a lot to this community.

“Avondale is special because the residents in this community care,” Jones Mitchell said. “The institutions in this community, they have partnered with the community and it just doesn’t get any better. I remember the time when that wasn’t happening. It’s happening now. So it doesn’t get any better than that, to have partners that care about the neighborhood.”

Projects included new turf fields, toy giveaways and free backpacks and school supplies.

“It’s going to touch every kid in Avondale,” Jones Mitchell said.

Jones Mitchell said while it’s a long day of work, she’s grateful to be a part of something that will touch so many kids in the neighborhood she’s called home.

“The kids are going to be touched,” she said. “They’re going to be touched. When they start this school in a couple weeks, they’re going to be happy.”
