ATHENS, Ohio — Frank Solich, the longtime head coach at Ohio University and the winningest coach in the history of the Mid-American Conference, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Solich cited a health concern for his retirement.

Solich, 76, has compiled a 115-82 record at Ohio and has led the Bobcats to 11 bowl games in 16 seasons.

Solich previously coached at Nebraska, where he led the Cornhuskers to a Big 12 title. He was named the national coach of the year in 1999 after the Cornhuskers finished No. 2 in the Coaches Poll. He was let go by Nebraska after a 9-3 season in 2003.

Tim Albin, who previously served as Ohio’s associate head coach and offensive coordinator, has been promoted to replace Solich. Albin has agreed to a four-year contract with Ohio University.

“After 55 years in coaching, including 16 at Ohio University, it is time for me to step away to focus on a cardiovascular health issue,” said Solich. “I’ve appreciated the support of Bobcat fans over the years, and I know they will continue to support coach Albin.”

Solich matched former Central Michigan coach Herb Deromedi for having the longest head coaching tenure in the MAC.

“Coach Solich has been a deeply valued part of the Ohio University family not only for his record on the field but also for his support of student athletes and their success at Ohio and after graduation,” said Ohio University President Hugh Sherman.

Solich hands the reins to Albin after the Bobcats went 2-1 in 2020. The Bobcats had a number of contests canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic after a delayed start to the season.

“I am forever indebted to coach Solich for all that he has offered me and taught me through the years, and I know he will always be part of our program,” Albin said. “Our team will provide an unmatched student-athlete experience both on and off the field and we will graduate young men prepared to succeed in life. With the help of our incredible staff I know great things lie ahead, and our work continues.”
