COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lauren Culley is getting ready to make the biggest chocolate chip cookies you may have ever seen—maybe the biggest chocolate chip cookies anyone has ever seen.

But she isn’t going to sell them.

Unlike pretty much any other baker in the world, she is going to give her secret recipe away so others may make her amazing cookies at home.

“Sharing recipes was something we wanted to do for a long time we just didn’t ever seem to have the time and then as soon as COVID happened it felt like that was all we did was have time and I think there was this act of seeing people in the shops feeding people that was missing. And so this was one way we felt like we could get back to doing that,” said Culley.

Culley is writing the recipe the way she would follow it if she were making a batch at her home in Columbus, the place she returned to open the cafe.

“I was living in New York City and I had a desk job and I thought that was going to be my career and then I got really into food and the food scene into New York and Brooklyn and I started volunteering in kitchens on nights and weekends as something to make me happy,” she said.

As she walked up the stairs to grab a baking sheet, Lauren said even after reopening things still look different in the cafe during the pandemic.

“It’s incredibly weird, because when we first started the cafe one of our main things was we didn’t want any WIFI,” she said. “We wanted it to the cafe to feel alive and to feel loud and to have music and people talking.”

But now, there’s only talking amongst employees or to customers stopping in to pick up their mobile orders, something manager Tiff Canfield says is working well.

“Yeah, actually surprisingly easy, people have been very receptive of it as well,” said Canfield.

And instead of eating these amazing cookies in her cafe, Lauren wants everyone to be able to enjoy them at home.
