HAMILTON, Ohio — In 2021, there is expected to be a total of 1.9 million new cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. One Ohio man who was recently diagnosed with stage three colon cancer has decided to use his talents to help him save up for a dream trip.

What You Need To Know

  • Joseph Bonanno was recently diagnosed with stage three colon cancer
  • It was his diagnosis that sparked his interest in starting a food truck to raise money for a special trip
  • By the end of the year, Bonanno plans to take a six-month boat trip from the Ohio River up to the Gulf of Mexico
  • So far, he’s raised 10% of his $8,000 goal and has already purchased his boat

Just three short months ago, Joseph Bonanno set up shop in Hamilton for his breakfast food truck. He’s always been a chef at heart.

“I’ve always cooked my whole life, and I just needed something I was comfortable with that I could do short term,” said Bonanno.

Breakfast burritos and biscuits and gravy are his top sellers. He started the food truck in an effort to save up for something special.

“I’m doing something I like, and it’s helping me generate the revenue to take my trip,” he said.

By the end of the year, Bonanno plans to take a six-month boat trip from the Ohio River up to the Gulf of Mexico. This trip is important to him because in 2014 he was diagnosed with stage two colon cancer.

“I was able to get seven good years, but I just hit stage three cancer about four weeks ago,” he said.

According to the American Cancer Society, it’s a five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with colon cancer. If he doesn’t take the trip soon, he believes it may never happen.

“It was either now and I hope at this point I can make it to take the trip because I don’t know what’s going on really,” he said. “But we’ll figure it out.”

He’s taking his revenue and money raised from his GoFundMe account to make the trip happen. So far, he’s already raised 10% of his $8,000 goal and has purchased his boat.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am especially with the response I’ve gotten from the customer base and the Facebook fans and my GoFundMe page,” he said.
