CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns fan base stretches far beyond Ohio’s borders — even into Kansas City.
Kent native Fred Bissler has always been a fan of the Cleveland Browns and still represents his favorite team away from Ohio.
“I did a lot of traveling, and I used to go out to other Browns Backers clubs, and I looked it up here, and there wasn’t one existing.”
So, when he moved to Kansas City in the 90s, he wanted to create a Browns Backers club to unite Browns fans, but ran into some problems.
“I needed members before I could have a chapter. It was like a ‘catch 22’ — I couldn’t have a chapter unless I have members, and I didn’t have any members because I didn’t have a chapter. So I, and you couldn’t do that in today’s environment, but I took a list of all of our employees and signed them up. And so that’s how we started it.”
He’s now the president of the Browns Backers of Kansas City with over 100 members. And now, his worlds collide as the Browns face the Chiefs in one of the biggest games in Browns team history. And he’s been hearing from fans non-stop.
“As far as being involved in our group, they’re coming out of the woodwork. As far as number of people that are coming in for the game, it’s been shocking to me. And a lot of them are just coming in to be here, which is very cool, I think,” said Bissler, “Hell, this week, I feel like a travel agent and a ticket broker. But no, it’s awesome.”
Quaff Bar & Grill in downtown Kansas City is the designated gameday location, which we’re told will follow COVID guidelines.
“It’s great having them here. You know, even when they were 0-16, they had a huge turnout. And they’re all such really good guys, so easy to get along with. I mean, no complaints and they love the Brownies,” said Steve Fanning with Quaff Bar & Grill.
Bissler gives us an insight as to what traveling browns fans can expect from the chiefs faithful.
“Their tailgating is by far phenomenal,” said Bissler, “But you know, I think going to an away game your always going to find your jerks and your always going to find some really good fans. Typically, the folks in Kansas City have been really good.”
Bissler admits that he is a little nervous for the people traveling for the game, but hopes everyone coming in will be safe and careful.
