CLEVELAND — City Dogs Cleveland is a program of the city’s Division of Animal Care and Control (CACC). Right now, the kennel is over capacity, with more than 100 dogs.

What You Need To Know

  • City Dogs Cleveland, the city’s kennel, is overcapacity with more than 100 adoptable dogs
  • Shelters across Ohio are experiencing the same situation
  • Reduced fees for pet adoptions are being offered this holiday season

“We are not usually full this time of year,” explained City Dogs adoption and volunteer coordinator Izzy Esler. “It has been a little bit hard because we’ve been operating at or over capacity for the past several months.”

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), more than 3.1 million dogs go into shelters each year across the U.S.

City Dogs seeks to ensure that everyone is properly matched based on personality and family dynamics. The organization emphasizes the responsibility and commitment required to take care of a dog.

“If you come in for a meet and greet, you will be paired with one of our adoption counselors to work with you and your family to introduce you to some dogs, talk a little bit about what you’re looking for, your lifestyle, what your household is like and what we know about the dog. And then we can help you find a good fit,” explained Esler.

Since there are so many furry friends at the shelter, City Dogs is running a holiday special through the end of December. Adoption fees are only $21, which is the price of a county dog license. The adoption fee includes basic vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery if needed and a microchip.
