COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new holiday tradition is spreading a little extra holiday cheer for pediatric patients this season.

What You Need To Know

  • Nationwide Children’s Hospital spreads several butterfly-themed lights throughout Central Ohio
  • The display cheers up many pediatric patients, like four-year-old Knox Nicholas
  • The butterfly display lights up each time someone makes a donation to the hospital

Nationwide Children’s Hospital lit up several butterfly lights throughout Central Ohio. One display is right outside the hospital along Livingston Avenue.

It’s to cheer up many patients, like Knox Nicholas.

Knox is only four-years-old, but he’s been battling hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which means he’s been born with half of a heart. Aside from his three open heart surgeries at Nationwide Children’s, Knox is back home.

His family just hopes this spreads joy to other children who can’t be home for the holidays.

“We have been here during the holidays, and it’s a really sad time,” said Christina Nicholas, Knox’s mother. “The fact that they have all these beautiful butterflies lit throughout the lawn that the children can look out through the windows and help brighten a day is just phenomenal.”

The butterfly display also gives back. Each time someone donates to the hospital, a butterfly lights up.
