CINCINNATI — It’s been a wild day in Cincinnati after a call to police saying monkeys were on the loose caused the city to go into a frenzy.

But it may not have been monkeys after all.

What You Need To Know

  • Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) got a call Wednesday night that there were several monkeys around St. Joseph Cemetery
  • CPD searched the surrounding areas all morning with no luck
  • Police said there’s no first-hand accounts of anyone seeing monkeys, since the original caller wasn’t positive
  • If someone is a monkey owner in the area and their animals have gotten out, they should contact CPD

Cincinnati Police got a call late Wednesday night to report monkeys hanging from trees outside of St. Joseph Cemetary on the west side.

“We’re looking for a report of several monkeys,” Cincinnati Police Department Sgt. Jacob Hicks said.

After hours of searching, no monkeys were found.

“We have actually not seen any monkeys, we have not seen any, we have no first-hand knowledge that there has been sightings,” Hicks said. “I know there were reports on Facebook and the like. We don’t have an owner yet.”

That Facebook report was a video showing animals in a tree, but because it was taken at night, it was hard to tell what it was. Police said the person that took the video wasn’t even sure.

But for workers at the cemetery, like Bruce Vanhook, it definitely made for an exciting day. He’s been on the lookout for monkeys on the property just in case.

“Like I said, just the normal wildlife that you see in suburban areas,” he said. “Definitely no monkeys.”

He said it’s brought more people out than he’s seen in awhile.

“Other than all the people in here, you just have to be a little more careful today because we’re never this crowded,” he said. “Just a lot of neck stretching going on right now.”
