OHIO — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports 70% of boating accidents in the state occur when the people involved are under the influence of alcohol.

What You Need To Know

  • Increased patrolling on the water this weekend
  • Spike in alcohol-related accidents onthe water during Fourth of July holiday
  • Sgt. Maggie Brown: “We want people to know that we take this seriously”

Sgt. Maggie Brown patrols the waters every year. She said the worst part of her job is reporting a death to loved ones that could have been prevented.

“I have been on details where I’ve had to inform people their love ones have died and they’re not coming back,” said Brown, “and that is no fun, especially when it’s the loved one that’s receiving that information.”

One drink on the water could have the same effect as three drinks on land, because of the rocking of the boat and the heat of the sun leading to dehydration, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

“Operation Dry Water” is a year-long initiative that gets extra attention during the Fourth of July weekend. The message to boaters is simple: stay sober on the water.

“We will have boats out in full force this weekend looking for people that are impaired and operating,” Brown said. “We want people to know that we take this seriously and we will be out there along with other agencies looking for people who are operating under the influence.”

Passengers are also advised to watch their alcohol intake.

“A lot of our passengers are the ones that sometimes cause the accidents. We had people jump off the boats that are moving and have been impaired and have gotten seriously hurt.”

Brown’s final message is to have fun, but be safe and smart.

“Happy Fourth of July, stay safe, wear your life jacket, and do not drink and drive while boating.”
