OHIO — Rep. Tim Ryan (D-13th District) is running for U.S. Senate, becoming the first Democrat to lauch a bid for the seat.

“Change is coming, and we’re going to flip this #OHSen seat. Like I always say, never bet against Ohio,” Ryan wrote in a tweet Monday.

“I am running to fight like hell in the U.S Senate to cut workers in on the deal,” Ryan said. “Ohioans are working harder than ever, they’re doing everything right, and they’re still falling behind.”

Ryan also attempted a run for president in 2019, and tried unseating House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2017. He announced in January he wouldn’t be re-running for his position when his term expired next year, saying he was exploring a run for Senate.

The 10-term Democrat representing the Mahoning Valley told Spectrum News in February he ruled out running for governor. Over the last few months, he’s picked up a handful of endorsements from unions, including the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters, The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers, and The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 6.

On the Republican side, it’s a crowded field. Former State Treasurer Josh Mandel, Former Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken, Cleveland car dealer Bernie Moreno, Army veteran and EMS pilot Michael Leipold, IT staffing firm founder Mark Pukita and Cleveland banker Mike Gibbons have all launched their campaigns.
