The community gathered Wednesday for a parade to celebrate and honor the team for earning the school’s first state title.

“Our future is so bright, and we’re very excited about what our boys have done,” said Marnisha Brown, Richmond Heights High School principal and district assistant superintendent.

Players said they had to fight through many obstacles during the season, including injuries, and expressed their appreciation for the city of Richmond Heights, the school district and the team’s athletic trainers.

Members of the sports medicine staff of University Hospitals of Cleveland showed up to support the players at the festivities.

Team physician Dr. Chris Tangen credited collaboration with the school’s athletics department, saying “it’s about communication.”

The team’s winning attitude also triumphed in the classroom.

Brown said the players averaged a 3.3 grade-point average throughout the season.

“Basketball is that love and it’s their means to get where they need to go, but — academically — they’re very sound,” said Brown.

Josiah Harris is a senior who committed to West Virginia University.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Harris said. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears.” Harris said.
