CLEVELAND — Jackie Lawrence had never been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until Monday.

She was among the limited number of guests allowed to be there in person.

“Today is the first day that my job honored Martin Luther King Day, so they gave us the day off so this is the first time in about 20 something years I’ve had MLK day off,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence said she’s grateful to be able to celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr’s. life.

“He gave us a lot to live for. This is a dream of a lifetime for us right now and I’m taking every moment possible. Without him a lot of things would not be possible today,” she said.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has celebrated MLK Day by offering free admission to the public for decades, Many Smith, director of education for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“It’s really important that we celebrate Martin Luther King, his legacy and our local black community in general,” Smith said.

For Lawrence, the event was also an opportunity to see how rock and roll history and America’s civil rights history intersect.

“I love it. It is beautiful. It is amazing and it’s everything I thought it would be,” Lawrence said.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also hosted virtual celebrations for those who couldn’t be there.
