DAYTON, Ohio — Tri-Village used a 9-0 run to close the first half, propelling the Patriots to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division IV girls’ basketball state championship, defeating Toledo Christian 52-50.
Senior Rylee Sagester’s final game in a Tri-Village uniform was memorable, with 20 points to finish with the most career made three-pointers in OHSA girls’ basketball history (401). The Marshall signee also topped the 2,000-point mark for her career.
She also matched her father, Josh, with perfect, 30-0 state championship seasons. He’s the boy’s head coach at Tri-Village, and accomplished the feat in 2015. There are now four programs, girls or boys, who have done that in OHSAA history.
Freshman Kynnedi Hager chipped in 10 points off the bench, while Morgan Hunt added 11.
The Eagles closed a 26-19 halftime deficit to 26-24, before another Patriots run (11-0) made it 37-24. Toledo Christian ran off seven straight to get to within two again in the fourth quarter at 44-42, but that is as close as it got.
Mackenzie Royal-Davis also had 20 points (and 11 rebounds) to lead the Eagles. Kendall Braden scored 12.
Toledo Christian (23-5) struggled to shoot the ball, especially in the first half, converting just 29% of its shots. Meanwhile, The Patriots were 18 of 36 (50%) from the field, six of 12 behind the arc (50%) and 10 of 12 at the line (83%).
