OHIO — A return to summer camp this year is welcomed by many families after a long time of staying home.

At the same time, parents have concerns about health measures in place to keep their children safe at camp during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s important that parents recognize that numerous studies, research studies, on camp operations from last summer (show) that camps can operate safely this summer as long as they’re following the best practices that were identified around COVID-19,” said Tom Rosenberg, the president and CEO of the American Camp Association.

Rosenberg urges parents to ask camps what their layers of protection are to keep kids safe, such as face masks for both campers and staff, keeping everyone in small groups, social distancing, pre-screening and disinfection.

While he said the necessities will be items like masks, hand sanitizer, and of course hats and sunscreen for protection from the sun, he said it’s important that everyone brings a “positive attitude.”

“For this summer of COVID to be successful for everyone, kids and staff need to work together with parents toward following the protocols that we know will work to mitigate the transmission of the virus,” Rosenberg said.
