CINCINNATI — This ordinary task of stocking the fridge might not seem very significant. But as it turns out, what Siri Imani is doing is pretty extraordinary.

What You Need To Know

  • A community fridge has been created in Over-The-Rhine to provide fresh food for people struggling with food insecurity
  • The fridge is inscribed with, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
  • The fridge is located at 1313 Vine St. in Cincinnati and will be available until at least Nov. 4
  • The group in charge of the initiative is grateful for donations from the community to keep the fridge stocked

“We want you to get what you need, and then if you don’t need it, leave it for somebody else,” said Imani, the coordinator and organizer for the Triiibe Foundation.

This fridge, located in the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, is a way for people experiencing homelessness or displacement to get something to eat.

Imani said so far, it’s been a big help.

“They’re excited that this even exists,” she said. “Because this is something that gives people hope as far as building a community that cares about each other truly and trusts each other.”

The concept for the fridge was the brainchild of Jordan Tuss, and Imani makes sure things run smoothly.

The group also provides personal hygiene care items like deodorant and toothpaste and even clothing, because hunger is just one of the challenges facing the homeless population.

She said there has been tremendous support from the community in making sure there’s enough food to keep the fridge stocked. But more donations are welcome and can be dropped off at 1313 Vine St. which is where the fridge is located.

“This is something that anybody can do,” Imani said. “It’s a community effort. Everything that’s in here is donated by the community, and we’re donating our time as well. It’s important to show how easily attainable it is, as far as helping your community. Even when you don’t have all the money in the world or a big corporation backing you. It’s still very possible if you just care and take the time to do it.”

The community fridge will be in place until Nov. 4, but Imani hopes it can be a permanent resource for people in OTR.
