GENEVA, Ohio — Teachers in a Northeast Ohio school system said they’re on strike over a disagreement with school administrators about distance learning.

What You Need To Know

  • The teachers are striking over a disagreement over distance learning
  • The teachers say there needs to be separate teachers for online and in-class
  • The school system says they tried to negotiate but the union wouldn’t agree

Geneva Area City Schools said the Geneva Area Teachers Association, the teachers’ union, did not want to not have to teach students both in-person and online at the same time. Fourth grade teacher and representative for the teachers union Cheryl Ramsey said it’s not about the money for the teachers, but ensuring the students are setup for success.

“We have been negotiating with the superintendent, the outgoing superintendent, and the incoming superintendent since June and we have come to a point where we cannot agree on the language that goes into the contract that enables teachers to do their best at teaching students in the classroom rather than simultaneously teaching students online in the classroom,” said Ramsey.

The Geneva Area City Schools Board of Education said they offered a compromise the night before the strike. They claim the union ignored the offer.
