CLEVELAND — K&D Management, the owner of Terminal Tower confirmed it notified the Cleveland Police Department about a light display shone on the tower Tuesday night, and K&D Management Group has since sent a cease-and-desist letter to the United Steelworkers.

What You Need To Know

  • Terminal Tower seemingly supported one candidate ahead of Tuesday’s debate
  • K&D Management Group which owns Terminal Tower said the building was “hijacked”
  • United Steelworkers is taking responsibility for the projected display supporting the Biden- Harris presidential ticket

The union is taking responsibility for a projected display supporting the Biden- Harris presidential ticket when the presidential debate was taking place in Cleveland.

Spokeswoman for the United Steelworkers Jess Kamm Broomell confirmed the union received the letter and that the union meant no harm.

“Just looking for beautiful, iconic buildings that can act as a landscape, and again, we’re not trying to be adversarial with this, it really is just to get people talking. We’re not looking to start any fights; our position is that this is legal,” Kamm Broomell said.

Based in Pittsburgh, United Steelworkers is the largest industrial workers union in North America. Broomell said though this light display was in support of a candidate, they also have similar exhibits shining a light on encouraging people to vote.

“There’s a lot at stake for working people. Healthcare, retirement, security, workers’ rights, all of these things are at play in this election, and we want to make sure everyone has a plan to vote,” she said.

In a statement given to Spectrum News 1, K&D Management said:

“The placement of the Biden-Harris light was unauthorized; the K&D Group does not endorse any candidate. It saddens me that someone would hijack terminal tower for political purposes. The K&D Group supports many good causes with our lighting displays. We always strive to be non-political.”

Terminal Tower is not the first building in the city or country the union has used as backdrop to send political messages. United Steelworkers officials said the displays are a part of a multi-state effort. However, they said whenever they are asked to take a projected display down, they do so with no hesitation, and that was the case in Cleveland.
