CINCINNATI — Happy couples might be taking a lot of pictures when they’re together, but what happens when you break up? One photographer came up with a way he said is empowering people who are newly single.

What You Need To Know

  • Zephon Price is known for his family portrait photography, but he recently switched gears
  • He’s taking pictures of newly divorced and/or newly single people
  • Price said the photos are meant to empower the person, not to get revenge on your ex

It’s wedding season. Pictures of happily engaged couples are about to start filling your social media feeds, but Zephon Price is trying to change that.

“I started off doing photography because I was being cheap when I had my daughter, and I didn’t wanna pay for people to take pictures of her,” said Price.

But his photography business started to grow, doing family photoshoots, and for a while he said he was making money doing wedding and engagement pictures, and then COVID-19 hit.

“It just got real slow after COVID and all of that, but it wasn’t really terrible because there were still people wanting to shoot,” said Price.

But instead of doing happy couple shoots, he’s started doing “break-up” shoots.

“Once these shoots start, it’s not even about your ex anymore. It’s all about you, and you’re feeling good at the end of the shoot,” said Price.

Anna Applegate knows that feeling all too well. The singer/songwriter broke up with her long-time boyfriend a few months back.

“I was like, this would be a really good, needed confidence boost for me,” said Applegate.

And with a music store as her backdrop, she’s now one of many who are part of the trend of having a photo shoot after a recent break-up.

Price said he’ll still do happy couple shoots if you want, but he hopes the break-up shoots will send a message.

“It’s not about who you were with them, or what you’re missing out on, but more so who you are,” said Price.
