OHIO — Most of Ohio is expecting “peak” fall colors heading into the first weekend of November, but those colors are starting to fade in parts of the state, according to Ohio Department of Natural Resources forecasters.

What You Need To Know

  • Most of Ohio is experiencing peak fall colors
  • Peak fall colors mean that up to 85% of trees are displaying colors
  • This year’s fall foliage season got off to a late start due to warm conditions
  • Forecasters say this weekend could be the last one before the leaves begin to fall

ODNR said on Thursday that 25 of its 30 reporting sites in Ohio are reporting peak fall foliage. The other five are reporting fading colors.

Peak conditions mean that up to 85% of trees are displaying fall colors. Fading means that leaves are starting to fall.

“Despite this year’s delay in color development, there are now areas showcasing breathtaking color displays,” said ODNR fall color forecaster David Parrott. “Today through next week will likely be this year’s peak condition for most of the state before leaf drop. This may be your last chance to find maples exhibiting vivid yellows, dazzling oranges, and deep reds and sweetgums turning deep purple.”

A week ago, most spots in Ohio were at near peak conditions, but some popular locales, including Hocking Hills and Mohican, have maintained peak fall colors for a second straight week.

Unlike last weekend when conditions were a bit damp, sunshine and mild temperatures are expected for the state this weekend.

ODNR officials previously noted a warm start to autumn dampened fall colors during much of October. Parrott previously noted that he was expecting peak fall colors would reach the state in mid-to-late October.

Here is the fall color forecast for 30 spots around the state.
