OHIO — Ahead of the Fourth of July, a coveted world record once again belonged to the United States.
On Thursday, Natural Light Beer rolled out the world’s longest Slip ‘N Slide.
Jill Selter, who worked on the project, said it was a labor of love.
“Well, obviously we want to keep the record in America so we had to work very, very hard to get it back here,” said Selter.
While it may look straight-forward, building the Slip ‘N Slide was actually an engineering nightmare.
“We’ve been out here testing for two and half days. We did everything we could to make sure we broke this record,” Selter said.
For the sliders like Peter Cook, who drove in from Belpre, it was a chance to make history.
“I’m not nervous,” Cook said. “Feeling excited about this. I’ve done water slides before, but nothing like this; should be fun.”
But how exactly did this record get away from us in the first place? And why are they so keen on getting it back?
Back in 2018, the country of Jordan, which gained a reputation for hoarding records, set a new Slip ‘N Slide record at 2,006 feet long.
Ahead of the Fourth of July, Selter and her team decided it was time for the U.S. to reclaim glory, with a slide 2,021 feet long.
“We have Guinness World Record here to see the whole thing and he OK’d it and we got that record back,” Selter said.
