BEAVERCREEK, Ohio — A Beavercreek couple raising a family had found their dream home, but over the past two years, it’s been a demoralizing process trying to get their home repaired back to what it used to be.

What You Need To Know

  • Jenny Andrea and her partner Sarah Mussman are suing their insurance company to get their home repaired
  • The house was devastated by an EF-3 tornado in 2019
  • Two years later, the damage is about the same as the day it happened
  • The couple is optimistic it will eventually get fixed but frustrated it has taken this long

When Jenny Andrea walks up to her Beavercreek home, she can’t help but think of everything that’s happened over the past two years.

“It has been the most stressful thing I’ve experienced financially, just emotionally,” Andrea said.

Luckily, no one was home when an EF-3 tornado struck her home, but since then, she said it’s been an absolute nightmare trying to get her house repaired.

“They’ve basically fought us on every portion of the policy,” Andrea said. “All the major portions — our dwelling, contents, living expenses — fought us tooth and nail.”

Her insurance company, Central Insurance, which is based in Van Wert Ohio, awarded them $80,000 to fix the home, but Andrea said that isn’t nearly half of what’s needed as estimates place the repairs at $260,000.

“The amount that they gave us essentially, it doesn’t even allow us to begin fixing it improperly to be quite honest with you.”

Over the past two years, she and her partner Sarah Nussman have been paying the mortgage and insurance on this property while also paying to live out of a hotel for five months before finding a rental property.

They also have a daughter who went through her senior year of high school during the entire ordeal.

“I honestly can’t even put into words how difficult it’s been,” Andrea said.

Andrea said they have exhausted all avenues to work with their insurance company, so now they are suing for the additional funds to complete the repairs.

“All along it’s really just been about fighting for some normalcy,” Andrea said. “Fighting to get things back for our family. Just fixing it properly is all we’ve asked for the entire time. That’s all we’re looking for.”

Spectrum News 1 reached out for comment from Central Insurance but have not received a response.

Andrea is hopeful they will win their lawsuit, but even then she said it will be years before they can move back into their home.
