Tom Shay got the chance to meet fellow members of the Democratic party at the 2021 Young Democrats of America National Convention — including Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley.

“We’re so happy it’s in Cincinnati to showcase the Queen City,” Cranley said. “Our city is experiencing a major renaissance. We’re very proud to show off our city and we’re glad that the Young Democrats came here.”

Shay is the fiscal officer for Braceville Township in Trumbull County. He also helps run political campaigns, so he’s using the convention as a chance to network.

“Pick up different skillsets and hear different experiences that work well in different parts of the country,” Shay said.

The convention consists of different seminars that provide the chance for emerging leaders to speak and share their ideas.

One of those speakers is Lourdes Barroso De Padilla who is running for Columbus City Council.

She said this convention helps strengthen the future of the Democratic Party.

“I think that as we see candidates rise to national status and as we see them go into other positions, it’s at conferences like this that we start to see those rising stars,” she said. “And I think it takes all of us to elevate those voices.”

Shay said meeting different dems is a great chance to know who can be used as a future resource.

“You never know when you need help with something,” Shay said. “Everyone has a strong suit, whether that’s fundraising or social media. It’s nice to meet up with them not on a campaign trail but more of a time to refresh and learn things throughout the week here.”

The convention began on Wednesday and will continue through Saturday.
