WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — This week’s Scholar Athletes of the Week come from Portsmouth West High School and are one and two, respectively, in their senior class.

Caleb Hazelbaker plays five sports: football, soccer, cross country, swimming, and baseball.

He has won numerous awards on the field and is a member of the Beta Club, Key Club, and Ohio Model United Nations.

He carries a 3.991 GPA, which is second in his class, and intends on seeking a pre-med major and playing soccer in college.

Haven Hileman has an equally impressive resume, playing soccer, running cross country, and participating in cheerleading.

She’s also takes part in the Ohio Model United Nationals and during the summer was the national champion in speech at the Beta Club competition.

Hileman is ranked first in her class with a 4.0 GPA and hopes to study animal science or zoology at Ohio State University next year.

Both student athletes said time management is the key in balancing their success on and off the field.

“Structure is definitely big and then I would definitely say responsibility is another,” Hazelbaker said. “Making sure that I’m staying on top of all my work and maintaining a good GPA and grades, it’s all very important to me.”

“In the classroom it helps you when you’re out on the field playing a sport because you’re determined and motivated in the classroom to do good, so it helps that effort flow onto the field. It’s kind of like a competition with yourself almost,” said Hileman.
