CINCINNATI — Camryn Morrow, a University of Cincinnati (UC) student, has always been passionate about giving back to her community.

What You Need To Know

  • Each year, UC hosts the Onyx and Ruby Gala to recognize African American alumni, students and staff for their achievements
  • This year’s student trailblazer is Camryn Morrow, a student who has worked to make campus a more welcoming environment
  • Morrow hopes after graduation, she can work for a nonprofit and continue to make a difference in other’s lives

“I’ve always enjoyed working inside my community, and I really wanted to be in a program that would allow me to learn more about how I can make a difference in the world,” said Morrow.

Morrow, a third-year student studying human development and community engagement, said it’s important for her to give back because she wants to make a difference.

“I definitely want to make sure that I’m creating opportunities for others and using the platforms that I have to inspire others and lifting as I climb,” said Morrow.

Throughout her three years at UC, she’s held leadership roles within the United Black Student Association, student government, the African American Cultural and Resource Center, and much more.

“Throughout my involvement, I’ve really enjoyed the relationships that I’ve been able to build. I’ve loved getting to meet new people and the conversations that I’ve been able to have with so many other incredible leaders on campus has been very rewarding for me,” she said.

Her passion for the community and empowering others is what also inspired her to create a book club for women of color called Sister Outsiders.

“We have a place to be vulnerable. We have a place to empower each other. We have a place to build the sisterhood, and it’s been incredible to see friendships and relationships blossom out of this organization,” she said.

On Wednesday, Morrow was one of six people to be awarded at the UC Onyx and Ruby Gala. Every year, the gala recognizes African American alumni, students and staff for their achievements. Morrow is being awarded the Student Trailblazer Award for her leadership, outstanding community involvement and paving a way for other students.

“I definitely did not see myself in this place three years ago when I stepped foot on campus and just knowing that there are other people on campus that believe in me and that are truly recognizing the work that I’m doing on campus felt really good,” she said.

After graduation next year, Morrow hopes to work at a nonprofit and make an even bigger impact across communities.

“I hope to end up in a space where I am able to really make an impact in my community,” she said. “I love working with students. I really hope to work in the nonprofit sector- specifically the art and culture sector and really serve students in the education field.”
