WESTERVILLE, Ohio — For Westerville South senior quarterback Peter Pedrozo, 2020 is his redemption story.

What You Need To Know

  • While the coronavirus remains present and causing cancellations, Westerville South is committed to staying safe
  • Senior QB Peter Pedrozo has returned from a broken collarbone last season and ranks among the top passers in the state
  • Westerville South graduates who moved onto success in college and the pros include Andy Katzenmoyer, Ki-Jana Carter and Lance Moore

His junior season was cut short when he broke his collarbone, and the Wildcats ended up with an early playoff exit. This year, Pedrozo, the team captain, is among the top in the state in passing, and the Wildcats are undefeated and serious contenders for a state championship.

“We’ve accomplished a lot of our goals,” Pedrozo said. “I’ve had some goals. I’ve accomplished and hopefully I can continue them in the playoffs. You know, I have a story receiving corps around me, good O-line, good running backs, and we’ve been doing our job.”

The Wildcats have succeeded off the field as well. The team has remained COVID-19 free all season.

“Put together a plan that we felt was the best to allow our three programs to be protected as much as possible,” Coach Matthew Christ said. “We basically have 40 guys on our varsity program that are totally isolated in terms of practice from our younger developing programs and that’s worked out really well for us.”

On the field, Christ said the players and coaches are very familiar with the Wildcats’ rich football tradition and what lies ahead in the playoffs.

“You know, certainly in the 90s, and 2000s, this place was booming in terms of both talent and winning,” Christ said. “That’s been our big picture goal has been to get back to that level, you know, there’s a little bit of fear to come play Westerville South.”

For Pedrozo, he’d love to one day see his team’s accomplishments displayed on the Westerville Wall of Excellence, with names like Andy Katzenmoyer, Ki-Jana Carter, and Lance Moore.

But he knows in 2020 nothing is for certain, and its best to take it game by game.

“I expect to win every night, no matter who we play,” Pedrozo said. “I think this team has a lot of potential and we’ve just scratched the surface of it.”
