CLEVELAND, Ohio — Baseball’s back!

Russ Mengle is working the grill and the popcorn machine, essential for opening day.

“Been a longtime Indians fan; I was at game seven when they lost to Chicago,” said Mengle. “So it’s been, I don’t know, six months since we’ve had live sports, so we’re definitely looking forward to it.”

What You Need To Know

  • Fans are excited, so are downtown businesses that depend on the game.
  • The season kicked off with no fans at Progressive Park
  • Since fans aren’t allowed in the stadium, the Wild Eagle Saloon has converted the bar into a baseball-themed environment

Mengle is the managing partner of the Wild Eagle Saloon, just down the street from Progressive Field.

“Probably during the summertime, probably about 70 percent of it. So we’re hoping because Cleveland fans are so loyal that they will still want to be close to the game even if they can’t go to it.”

Tables are spread out at least six-feet apart, so fans can safely welcome baseball back to Cleveland.

“I live downtown. So we’re used to walking around and testing out the vibe, so we just wanted to see how it was different today,” said Indians fan Julie Callsen.

Callsen is watching the game with friends. While she’s happy to have baseball back, she admits she’s still getting used to sports without a crowd.

“There’s always a vibe downtown with sports in general, so it’s just kind of missing something without the spots.”

A season like no other, but one that fans and businesses are grateful for.
