RAVENNA, Ohio — Lissy Kuhn spends her days on the farm working to give all different types of animals a second chance.

What You Need To Know

  • Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary rescues farm animals who have been abused, neglected or abandoned
  • Happy Trails works closely with law enforcement to save animals
  • Most animals can be adopted to loving forever homes

The farm animals at Happy Trails come from criminal cases of neglect, abuse, or abandonment.

“There is lot of shelters that are looking out for dogs and cats, and that’s so wonderful, but there is very little looking out for farm animals,” Kuhn said. “We are one of the only organizations in this area that someone can call if they find a potbelly pig that’s being abused. Not many people are looking out for cows, or cock fighting roosters, so we are here to serve the animals that are really almost forgotten about.”

While some of the animals spend the rest of their days at the farm, the goal for most at Happy Trails is to find them their forever homes.

“When we see them go home, yes, it is hard because we have fallen in love with them, but it is the best feeling in the world because they are going home to their happily ever after, where they will be somebodies best friend too,” Kuhn said.

But not all days are happy at the farm. Kuhn said it’s heartbreaking for her when they get the call to rescue. Animals normally come to the farm from law enforcement and humane officers.

“The pig that’s been boarded closed in a shed and abandoned, that is so tough to see. We don’t understand it, but we are there to rehabilitate her. The cow that hasn’t been fed for over a week and a half, the little week-old cow, who is given a 50/50 chance of survival, that’s really tough. It’s really hard for us,” Kuhn said. “There is a lot of tears but in the moment you just have to get through it.”

Happy Trails has been saving animals for around 20 years and they rely solely on private donations from supporters to continue helping animals.

“We really give back, and we really appreciate the support that we see in return,” Kuhn said. “Every dollar counts here, honestly, towards veterinary care and the general care for these animals.”

People may visit the animals at Happy Trails by appointment every weekend until the end of October.
